TransJakarta Considers Fare Increase, Residents Demand Service Improvements
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Plans for a TransJakarta fare increase have elicited varied responses from the public. The issue has surfaced amid rising living costs. Several users believe the fare hike is still acceptable. The condition is that services must also be improved. Dewi (35) expressed support with caveats regarding service quality. “If the fare increase is accompanied by improvements in services, infrastructure, and facilities, I agree. But if not, I clearly disagree because it will further burden residents’ economies,” she told Kompas.com on Friday (24/4/2026). “The timing is not right if it rises soon. Non-subsidised fuel has just gone up, essential commodity prices have also risen. If everything rises, how should the public manage mobility?” she added. Adhit (25) views the planned increase as still within reasonable limits. He compares it to fares for other modes like the LRT. “If it rises in the range of Rp5,000 to Rp7,000, it’s still okay, but it must be balanced with service improvements. The fleet, stops, and staff services must be enhanced,” he explained. He also highlighted the uneven condition of stops. Facilities in the city centre are deemed better than in peripheral areas. “Stops in the city centre like HI or Harmoni are already quite good. But in peripheral areas, many are cramped, with inadequate facilities, and even in unworthy conditions,” he added. TransJakarta’s President Director Welfizon Yuza stated that a study has already been conducted. The final decision lies with the regional government along with the DKI Jakarta DPRD. “We have conducted a study regarding the fare increase, which has remained at Rp3,500 since 2005. So approximately 21 years (without increase),” Welfizon said during a meeting with Commission B of the DKI Jakarta DPRD on Thursday (23/4/2026). Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo had previously mentioned plans for fare adjustment. He noted proposals for new fares from the public. “I hear that the average proposals from the public, including those received through the media by me, are in the range of Rp5,000 to Rp7,000,” Pramono said in October 2025.
