A head-on collision between two Transjakarta buses on the Corridor 13 elevated busway in South Jakarta was caused by one of the drivers falling asleep. PT Transjakarta has confirmed that the driver responsible will face sanctions.

“He will certainly face sanctions,” said Tjahyadi Dermawan, Head of Transjakarta’s Corporate Secretary and Public Relations Division, speaking to reporters on Tuesday (24/2/2026).

Tjahyadi said the company is currently conducting an investigation into the incident. He added that the operator responsible for the bus in service would also be subject to penalties.

“It’s not just the driver — the operator will also face sanctions. We are currently investigating to determine the root cause of the problem,” Tjahyadi said.

Tjahyadi explained that drivers should be honest if they feel unfit for duty. He suggested there were failings on the operator’s part, with indications that proper checks on bus drivers were not carried out.

“Drivers must be fit throughout their shift. If they feel unwell, they must be honest and request to stand down from duty,” Tjahyadi said.

“On the operator’s side, they must conduct fitness checks while drivers are on duty. This incident suggests that such checks were not carried out,” he added.

Two Transjakarta buses were involved in the collision on the Corridor 13 elevated busway near Cipulir, Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta. Dozens of passengers were injured in the incident.

AKBP Ojo Ruslani, Head of the Traffic Law Enforcement Sub-directorate at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, said the accident occurred at 07.15 local time on Monday (23/2). The collision involved a Transjakarta Bianglala bus driven by a man identified by the initial Y, travelling from Kebayoran towards Cipulir, and a Transjakarta Mayasari Bakti bus driven by a person identified as A, heading from Cipulir to Kebayoran.

According to preliminary findings, driver Y admitted to falling asleep while driving. As a result, the bus he was operating veered out of its lane, causing the collision.

“Y admitted to falling asleep while driving, causing his vehicle to cross into the oncoming lane, resulting in a head-on collision,” Ojo said in a statement on Monday (23/2).
