TransJakarta Bus Head-On Collision Allegedly Caused by Drowsy Driver
Police have stated that an accident involving two TransJakarta bus units was allegedly caused by one of the drivers falling asleep at the wheel.
The accident, which occurred at approximately 07:15 Western Indonesian Time, began when a TransJakarta bus driven by a man identified by the initial Y was travelling from Kebayoran towards Cipulir, whilst another bus driven by A was heading from Cipulir to Kebayoran.
“At precisely 7:15 WIB, Y admitted to falling asleep due to drowsiness, causing the bus he was driving to veer into A’s lane. It was possibly due to fatigue,” said Head of Law Enforcement Subdivision at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Traffic Directorate, Senior Commissioner Ojo Ruslani, to reporters on Monday (23/2).
Separately, Head of Public Relations at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Commissioner Budi Hermanto, said the incident left 23 passengers with minor injuries.
“There are currently 23 recorded victims, all with minor injuries,” he said.
Budi stated that the dozens of victims with minor injuries had been rushed to hospital for medical treatment.
“Traffic officers from Serdang are currently evacuating victims to the nearest hospital for treatment, conducting a crime scene investigation, and managing traffic,” Budi said.
The traffic accident involving the two TransJakarta bus units occurred on the elevated Corridor 13 route, commonly known as the “Sky Route”, near Cipulir Station in South Jakarta on Monday (23/2) morning.
The incident took place as both buses were travelling along the dedicated TransJakarta lane.
In circulating video footage, both vehicles sustained considerable damage to their front sections. The collision was believed to be a head-on crash between vehicles travelling in opposite directions.
Head of Public Relations and CSR at TransJakarta, Ayu Wardhani, said the accident involved operator bus fleet units BMP 263 and MYS 17100 on Corridor 13 (the Swadarma section towards Cipulir).
“TransJakarta extends its sincerest apologies for the accident involving operator bus fleet units BMP 263 and MYS 17100 on Corridor 13 (the Swadarma section towards Cipulir) this morning. Our primary focus at this time is ensuring the safety of our passengers,” she said in a written statement.
