Transjakarta and MRT Allow Passengers to Break Fast on Board — Here Are the Rules
PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) has introduced a special policy for the holy month of Ramadan. For the coming month, passengers will be permitted to break their fast whilst on board Transjakarta buses.
Passengers are not permitted to consume heavy meals inside the vehicles. They are only allowed to break their fast with drinking water and light snacks when the Maghrib call to prayer sounds. Eating and drinking on board is limited to a maximum of 10 minutes after the Maghrib adhan.
Passengers may also visit the retail outlets and food tenants available at a number of Transjakarta stops to purchase food for breaking their fast. Passengers are urged to maintain cleanliness and shared comfort whilst within the service areas.
Meanwhile, PT MRT Jakarta has implemented a similar special policy for passengers breaking their fast on trains or within station areas during Ramadan.
MRT Jakarta has set a time-limited rule for breaking fast. Passengers may break their fast for a maximum of 10 minutes after the Maghrib call to prayer. MRT passengers are only permitted to break their fast with bottled plain water and dates. Breaking fast with rice and side dishes, snacks, ready-to-eat meals, tea, coffee, or syrup is prohibited.
MRT users are asked to maintain the cleanliness of carriages and station areas during Ramadan iftar.
Across all modes of public transport, the general rule is that passengers may break their fast when the Maghrib prayer time arrives. However, the policy applies only to light snacks or takjil, not full meals. The purpose of these regulations is to maintain cleanliness, avoid strong odours, and ensure the comfort of all passengers in confined spaces.
Simple preparations such as carrying mineral water and dates are highly recommended, particularly for commuters who must break their fast mid-journey.
