Transhumanism and the Future of Human Autonomy
The artificial intelligence revolution has brought humanity to the threshold of a transhumanist era, where the boundaries between humans and machines are increasingly blurred. Transhumanism, as a view, believes that technology can be used to enhance human capacity, whether physically, biologically, or cognitively. Through technology, humans are believed to be able to overcome various limitations that have so far been considered a natural part of life.
For some, transhumanism represents great hope for the future of humankind. Technology enables humans to live healthier, be more productive, and perhaps even more intelligent. However, for others, transhumanism raises a far more fundamental question: when technology increasingly merges with human life, do humans still have the ability to determine their own path?
Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic (the company behind the Claude model), recently called for a global pause in artificial intelligence development. Amodei warned that AI models are approaching self-improvement capabilities without human intervention. This statement raises the hypothetical concern that the pace of AI development could potentially spiral beyond human control.
Furthermore, Anthropic highlighted the serious risks of frontier AI models (the most advanced, such as Claude Mythos and GPT-5.6 Sol) being nearly capable of recursive self-improvement. If left unsupervised, this could lead to an ‘intelligence explosion’ as predicted by philosopher Nick Bostrom, where artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence exponentially.
From a transhumanist perspective, such as that of Ray Kurzweil, this progress is a natural evolution towards the singularity. However, a critical perspective from Eliezer Yudkowsky, and even insiders at Anthropic, stresses that without strict alignment, AI could optimise goals that are not aligned with human values, thereby eroding collective and individual autonomy.
In the modern philosophical tradition, human freedom is understood not only as the ability to act, but also as the capacity to think and make conscious choices. Immanuel Kant referred to this as human autonomy, the individual’s capacity to use their reason independently without being entirely controlled by external factors. Symptoms of this erosion are already visible in daily life; many people are increasingly dependent on recommendations shaped by filter bubbles, carrying the risk that critical thinking processes are slowly being replaced by automated logic.
This issue becomes even more relevant as the world enters a digital economy era based on artificial intelligence. Various companies are racing to adopt AI technology to boost productivity and efficiency. This phenomenon is part of an almost inevitable global economic transformation. A study titled ‘The AI Layoff Trap’, published by Brett Hemenway Falk and Gerry Tsoukalas in 2026, explains that AI-based automation can create an economic paradox if not balanced with the strengthening of human resource capacity. When companies increasingly rely on AI and humanoid robots to replace human labour, productivity does increase. However, if society loses job opportunities on a large scale, purchasing power will also potentially decline due to weakened public demand.
Indonesia is one of the countries with the largest number of internet and social media users in the world. The national digital ecosystem is growing rapidly, and the adoption of artificial intelligence across various sectors is also starting to increase. This situation opens up significant opportunities for economic growth, public service improvement, and the development of national digital talent. Building human-centred AI governance is also a crucial agenda. This approach places human values as the main foundation in technological development.
Therefore, a contextual and adaptive long-term strategy is urgently needed to be integrated into technology governance regulations. This effort can be pursued by adding curricula that focus on mental resilience, critical philosophical thinking, and an understanding of technology ethics, which will serve as the main shield for future generations in facing the hegemony of artificial intelligence. The AI revolution will continue. Transhumanism will remain part of the debate about the future of civilisation. But one thing must be maintained: the belief that humans must remain at the centre of every technological advancement. For the measure of a civilisation’s success, in the end, is not solely determined by how advanced the machines it creates are, but by our ability to ensure that such progress preserves human freedom, humanity, and autonomy.
