Indonesia’s digital transformation cannot rely solely on technology but must begin with a change in mindset. This was evident at the Studium Generale event of the Indonesian Digital Innovation Centre (PIDI) – DIGDAYA x Hackathon 2026, themed “Innovating for the Future, Empowering Digital Talent”. The event is a national initiative spearheaded by Bank Indonesia alongside OJK, industry players, and various strategic partners to support the digital transformation of Indonesia’s economy and finance. Rafi Putra Arriyan, Co-Founder of Flip, shared Flip’s journey in the session “Turning Mindset into Real-World Innovation”. He emphasised that innovation does not always start with grand ideas but from a deep understanding of problems truly felt by users. “Flip began by providing an innovative solution to one of the most real financial problems: sending money. However, as we increasingly understood user needs, true innovation occurred when we stayed close to them and comprehended their requirements. In that way, we could identify various other related problems, from how they shop to how they save,” Rafi stated in his remarks on Thursday, 7 May 2026. Originating from a simple solution to eliminate interbank transfer fees, Flip has continued to develop by following increasingly complex user needs, ranging from payments for various necessities, international transfers, to features integrated with Indonesia’s digital ecosystem. Currently, Flip serves more than 16 million users in Indonesia. This growth reflects the broadening needs of society for practical and relevant financial services in daily life. Rafi also highlighted that many innovations fail because they are only appealing in concept but not relevant to real market needs. Flip’s early experience shows that understanding users’ “pain points” is far more important than merely building solutions that appear sophisticated. “Start small mindset. We used to think innovation meant creating something that had never existed before. It turns out that the most difficult innovation is providing solutions that remain relevant to problems that keep changing. For us, innovation requires courage, humility, collaboration, and patience,” Rafi concluded.
