REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA — The Transformational Teacher Programme is driving improvements in the English language competency of English teachers at the madrasah level. This eight-month training and mentoring programme has demonstrated results in teachers’ abilities and classroom teaching approaches.

The programme, run by PT Pegadaian, involves 30 teachers from 13 Madrasah Tsanawiyah and 6 Madrasah Aliyah in Surabaya and Sidoarjo. Participants attended hybrid training focused on enhancing English skills and teaching methods.

Evaluation results show an improvement in teachers’ English abilities based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) standards. The majority of participants, who were previously at A2 level, advanced to B1 level after completing the programme.

The Regional Head of PT Pegadaian Kanwil XII Surabaya, Ahmad Zaenudin, stated that the programme is expected to have a direct impact on learning quality. “We hope the teachers can apply innovative and enjoyable teaching methods to enhance students’ abilities and confidence,” said Ahmad in a press release on Thursday (23/4/2026).

The Transformational Teacher Programme concluded with an English Festival, serving as a platform to reflect on the training outcomes. The event featured competitions such as spelling bee, school feud, and news anchor, involving students and participating teachers.

One participant, Erda Kustiah, said the training provided a new experience in English teaching. “English training is rare for us, so it offers an enjoyable experience. We also feel more confident when teaching in class,” she stated.

Support for the programme comes from the East Java Provincial Ministry of Religious Affairs. The Head of the East Java Kemenag Regional Office Division, Sugiyo, said the training helps increase the capacity of madrasah teachers.

The Transformational Teacher Programme is one of the efforts to improve the quality of education in madrasahs, particularly in English proficiency. Strengthening teacher capacity is expected to have a sustainable impact on students’ abilities.
