Transformation of Drug Discovery and Distribution: Novo Nordisk and OpenAI Forge Strategic Partnership
Novo Nordisk has announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI to accelerate the company’s efforts in delivering more innovative and high-quality treatment options for patients.
Novo Nordisk President and CEO Mike Doustdar stated that this partnership will leverage advanced AI capabilities to analyse complex data, identify promising drug discoveries, and shorten the time from research to patient access.
He assured that the collaboration is designed with robust data protection, governance, and human oversight to ensure ethical and regulatory-compliant use of technology.
“Millions of people living with obesity and diabetes need more treatment options, and we recognise that many life-changing therapies remain undiscovered,” Mike said in his statement on Thursday, 16 April 2026.
He added that integrating AI into daily work enables the company to analyse data on a scale previously impossible, identify previously unseen patterns, and test hypotheses more quickly than before.
“Thus, this collaboration helps us accelerate the discovery of new therapies and bring them to market faster than ever,” he said.
Meanwhile, OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman stated that OpenAI will assist Novo Nordisk in enhancing the global workforce’s skills and AI literacy across the organisation.
The partnership will also utilise OpenAI’s capabilities to optimise efficiency in manufacturing, supply chains, distribution, and overall company operations. A pilot programme will be launched across departments, including research and development, manufacturing, and commercial operations, with full integration targeted for completion by the end of 2026.
“AI is transforming various industries, and in the life sciences sector, this technology can help people live better and longer,” Sam said.
“This collaboration with Novo Nordisk will help accelerate scientific discovery, run smarter global operations, and redefine the future of patient care,” he added.
