The Medan city government in North Sumatra has stated its readiness to follow the central government’s policy regarding the transfer of employment status of teachers holding the status of Government Employees with Work Agreements (PPPK) to central government employees. Currently, regional authorities are still awaiting official technical guidelines to implement the regulation.

Medan Mayor Rico Tri Putra Waas emphasised that his administration will carry out all decisions set by the central government. However, he stressed the importance of derivative regulations as the basis for implementation at the regional level.

“We are waiting for the technical guidelines. Whatever the central government decides, we will implement it. However, we will examine all of these matters thoroughly,” said Rico in Medan on Wednesday (19/8).

The status transfer policy was previously announced by the Minister of State Secretary, Prasetyo Hadi. This measure is the result of an agreement reached in a meeting between the government and the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), which took into account the national fiscal condition.

Under the new scheme, there are two main points of transformation for teaching staff. Based on data from the Medan City Personnel and Human Resources Development Agency (BKPSDM), thousands of teaching staff will be affected by this status transfer policy.

Rico added that his team will immediately conduct an in-depth review of the regulation as soon as the policy is officially implemented. This is to ensure that the employment transition process within the Medan city government proceeds in accordance with the applicable legal and administrative framework.
