A member of Commission B of the Jakarta Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) from the PSI faction, Francine Widjojo, suspects that one of the causes of the Trans-Jakarta bus accident was the fatigue experienced by drivers due to the distance they have to travel to the depot. Many drivers live far from the location where they collect the buses, so they are already tired even before starting their duties.

“It is necessary to ensure working hours, rest periods, travel distances, and the scheduling of shift changes to maintain the condition of drivers and prevent physical and mental fatigue,” Francine said in a statement on Wednesday (25/2).

She also highlighted the need to optimise the Trans-Jakarta command centre. According to her, a number of buses have been equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and Driver Monitoring System (DMS) technology, which should be able to detect potential driver drowsiness.

“This expensive equipment was purchased from taxes and fares paid by the public. It should be able to guarantee the safety of passengers on the road,” she emphasised.

She asked management to ensure that all buses, including micro-transport services, are equipped with ADAS/DMS devices and connected to the command centre. If not, the installation should be expedited to prevent potential accidents from occurring early on.

In addition to improving the system, Francine also asked the DKI Provincial Government to ensure that all victims receive the best possible care until they fully recover.

“We ask the Provincial Government to ensure that this accident does not happen again in the future,” she concluded. (Far/I-1)
