Train Ticket Discount Programme Sees Surge, Passengers Exceed 1.3 Million

The discounted train fare programme during the school holiday period has received a positive response from the public. As of 5 July 2026, a total of 1,303,191 passengers had utilised the programme, reaching 110 per cent of the target of 1,174,624 passengers. This achievement also represents a 13 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2025, which recorded 1,152,581 passengers. The government allocated a budget of Rp 90.9 billion to provide a 30 per cent discount on non-Public Service Obligation (PSO) and non-pioneer economy-class train services.

Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs spokesperson Haryo Limanseto stated that the transport incentive was provided to maintain public purchasing power whilst encouraging economic activity during the school holiday period. ‘This incentive and discount policy for transport is designed to encourage people to travel more during the school holiday period, so that economic activity in various regions also moves. So far, the realisation has been going well and public uptake of the programme has been optimal, showing that the stimulus is able to provide benefits directly felt by the community,’ Haryo said in a written statement on Tuesday (7/7/2026).

In addition to trains, the government is also providing fare discounts on sea transport through PT Pelni. As of 6 July 2026, the programme had been utilised by 481,503 passengers, or around 69 per cent of the target of 693,690 passengers. The budget realisation reached Rp 46.9 billion, while the programme runs until 15 August 2026. In the ferry sector, the port service fee waiver incentive has also shown high realisation. Based on boarding data up to 5 July 2026, a total of 1,125,088 passengers, or 93.25 per cent of the target, have utilised the programme. The government provides a full waiver of port service fees, equivalent to a discount of approximately 21.11 per cent on ferry ticket prices on several routes managed by PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry. Haryo said the government will continue to monitor the implementation of these various stimulus measures so that the benefits are felt more widely by the public while maintaining the momentum of national economic growth.
