Tragic: Peace Task Force Officer Brigadier Fredi Lukas Killed in Yahukimo Stabbing, Suspect at Large
Yahukimo, VIVA – A member of the National Police serving with the Cartenz-2026 Peace Operation Task Force, Brigpol Fredi Lukas Awes, has died whilst on duty in Yahukimo Regency, Highland Papua.
The victim is believed to have been assaulted with a sharp weapon by unknown persons (OTK). The incident occurred on Monday night, 20 July 2026, at around 23.30 local time (WIT).
Brigpol Fredi Lukas Awes was found in the area of the Halabok Paradiso Belakang Farm Road Complex, Dekai District, Yahukimo Regency, dead with multiple wounds inflicted by a sharp weapon.
The Cartenz-2026 Peace Operation Task Force, together with the Yahukimo District Police and the attached Mobile Brigade Yon B of the Papua Regional Police, are still hunting the perpetrator whilst investigating the motive behind the attack.
The victim’s body was evacuated to Dekai Regional Hospital for a medical examination before being flown to Jayapura City. The late officer has now been laid to rest at the family home.
Deputy Head of the Cartenz-2026 Peace Operation Public Relations Task Force, Adjunct Senior Commissioner of Police Andri Alam, said officers moved immediately to carry out a series of investigations upon receiving the report.
“Officers immediately secured the crime scene, processed the site, collected evidence, took statements from witnesses, and conducted investigations and pursuit of the suspect believed to have carried out the assault resulting in the victim’s death,” said AKBP Andri, quoted on Wednesday, 22 July 2026.
He stressed that the entire investigative process is being carried out professionally, objectively, and in accordance with legal provisions to identify the perpetrator and the motive behind the incident.
The Head of the Cartenz-2026 Peace Operation, Inspector General of Police Faizal Ramadhani, also expressed his condolences over the death of Brigpol Fredi Lukas Awes, who was carrying out a state duty.
“We convey our deepest condolences over the death of one of the National Police’s finest personnel whilst performing a state duty. The late officer’s service reflects dedication and loyalty in maintaining security and providing protection to the community. We assure you that this incident will be handled professionally, in a measured manner, and in accordance with applicable law. All investigative steps continue to be taken to identify those responsible and to keep the security and public order situation safe and conducive,” said Faizal.
Meanwhile, Deputy Head of the Cartenz-2026 Peace Operation, Commissioner of Police Adarma Sinaga, said the joint team is continuing to gather evidence and delve deeper into witness statements to uncover the case.
