Heavy rain pounded emergency shelters established by Lebanese refugee families along Beirut’s waterfront on Sunday, 15 March 2026. Poor weather conditions caused mattresses, clothing, and other belongings to become soaked as rainwater penetrated temporary tent coverings.

Several families sheltering in the Corniche waterfront area are surviving in makeshift camps, with some using only plastic tarps strung up under trees for protection.

Mohammad Marie, 41, a refugee from Nabatieh, described how wind storms the previous night had blown away the plastic tarp covering his sleeping area. “I have become ill because of this rain, and it may continue raining for a week, so where am I supposed to go?” Marie said. “I have nowhere to shelter except here, under this tree,” he added.

Along the Corniche area, refugees could be seen spreading clothes and blankets to dry whenever the rain paused briefly.

The humanitarian situation in Lebanon has deteriorated since the country was drawn into Middle Eastern conflict on 2 March. The Hezbollah militia group launched attacks against Israel, citing retaliation for the killing of Iran’s top leader.
