A devastating fire has swept through a densely populated residential area on Jalan Kemayoran Gempol, Kebon Kosong, Kemayoran, leaving residents in deep distress. Approximately 250 houses were reported burnt, impacting an estimated 350 families. While traffic in the surrounding area has since returned to normal, the aftermath of the blaze remains visible.

The fire was brought under control after seven hours of firefighting operations. Emergency services received the initial report on Monday (1/6/2026) at approximately 20:55 WIB, with extinguishing operations commencing at 21:05 WIB and concluding at 04:15 WIB. Three individuals sustained injuries during the incident and were rushed to hospitals, including RS Hermina Kemayoran and RSCM.

The cause of the fire is suspected to be an electrical short circuit. Kemayoran Police Chief, Commissioner Agung Ardiyansah, stated that the fire broke out in the area behind Pasar Jiung. The flames reportedly originated from two houses and spread rapidly. Although local residents attempted to combat the flames using fire extinguishers from the local RW 04 administration, the fire grew too large to contain.

On Tuesday morning, firefighters remained on standby at the scene as smoke continued to rise from the charred debris. Residents were seen scavenging through the ruins in hopes of salvaging remaining belongings. The destruction was widespread, with police lines established around the site.

The human cost of the disaster is profound. Lilis (46), one of the victims, lost her home along with her entire savings intended for her child’s graduation. She described how the fire spread so quickly that she had no time to save valuables. Similarly, another resident, Saodah, recounted the terrifying moments she had to flee her home with the help of a walking stick, eventually reuniting with her children two hours later near a bajaj.

Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno expressed the provincial government’s condolences and highlighted the recurring issue of electrical safety. He noted that based on surveys by the Jakarta Provincial Government, approximately 95 per cent of fires in the capital are caused by electrical short circuits, often due to overloaded sockets or poor installations. He urged the public to regularly inspect their home electrical wiring to prevent such tragedies.
