Traffic offenders punished
BANGKOK (Reuter): The Bangkok metropolitan police began a 10- day campaign yesterday to punish some of the city's undisciplined motorists and pedestrians blamed for exacerbating the capital's notorious traffic snarls.
Police said the campaign, which will run through New Year's eve, would deploy 4,000 police officers on the streets in an effort to crack down on traffic violators either behind the wheel or on foot.
Studies by the traffic board committee found that disregard for traffic laws was a major cause of the city's traffic congestion, which has reached nightmarish proportions. Several million cars, motorcycles, buses and trucks struggle to enter and leave the city each day.
