Traffic grinds to halt outside West Jakarta City Hall as Ring Road underpass floods
Jakarta (ANTARA) — Traffic in front of the West Jakarta City Government Office ground to a complete halt on Friday evening due to flooding at the Ring Road Kembangan traffic lights.
Observations at the scene at 19:45 Western Indonesian Time showed congestion snaking along Jalan Puri Kembangan in front of the West Jakarta City Government Office all the way to Cengkareng.
As a result, numerous motorcyclists chose to pull over in front of the West Jakarta City Government Office and at the junction towards Meruya before the Mayor's Office.
Among them was Handi (43), a resident of Duri Kosambi, Cengkareng, who deliberately pulled over after travelling more than 10 kilometres from the Blok M area in South Jakarta.
"Traffic was already congested on the way home from work, and then when I reached the Kembang Kerep area it was severely jammed. I stopped to take a rest," Handi said at the scene on Friday evening.
Handi suspected the severe congestion was caused by flooding at the Kembangan Ring Road traffic lights.
"I think it's because of the flooding under the overpass, that's what's causing the gridlock. I'm heading home to Duri Kosambi," he said.
Meanwhile, Kembangan Police Sector Traffic Unit Chief AKP Karta confirmed that the severe congestion was caused by waterlogging beneath the Kembangan Ring Road.
"Yes, the gridlock is due to waterlogging on the road at that location," Karta said via text message.
Karta assured that officers were stationed at the scene to ease the congestion in front of the West Jakarta City Government Office and the surrounding area.
"Officers are on standby, with personnel directing traffic at the location," Karta explained.
