Traffic Corps Warns Public Against Hoax on Rp 250,000 Fine for Bald Tyres
The Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas Polri) has confirmed that a narrative circulating on social media, claiming motorcyclists with bald tyres will be fined Rp 250,000 or face one month’s imprisonment, is a hoax. The public is urged not to readily believe such information.
Kombes Dwi Sumrahadi Rakhmanto, Head of the Sub-Directorate for Enforcement and Guidance at Korlantas Polri, explained that the circulating information is incorrect. “Korlantas Polri urges the public not to easily believe information spreading on social media regarding a supposed new regulation stating that motorcyclists with bald tyres will be fined Rp 250,000 or face a one-month prison sentence,” he said in a statement on Thursday (23/7/2026).
He explained that regulations concerning vehicles are already stipulated in Law No. 22 of 2009. This regulation details the required condition of vehicle tyres. “Provisions regarding vehicles that do not meet technical and roadworthiness requirements have long been regulated in Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Road Traffic and Transportation. Article 48 explains that every motor vehicle operated on the road must meet technical and roadworthiness requirements, including tyres that are still fit for use,” he stated.
Furthermore, he explained that Article 285 paragraph (1) stipulates that motorcyclists operating vehicles that do not meet technical and roadworthiness requirements may be subject to a maximum imprisonment of one month or a maximum fine of Rp 250,000. “Therefore, this sanction is not a new rule and is not specifically imposed for bald tyres, but rather a long-standing provision for any vehicle that does not meet technical and roadworthiness requirements,” he said.
Korlantas Polri continues to prioritise preventive measures through education and public outreach, encouraging the public to regularly check their vehicle’s condition, including replacing worn or bald tyres. These efforts are undertaken as a form of traffic accident prevention and to enhance the safety of all road users. Korlantas Polri also calls on the public to be wiser in receiving information in the digital space. Any information received should be verified first through official Korlantas Polri channels to avoid being easily influenced or participating in spreading false information.
