Traffic Corps: Fatality Rate in Eid Accidents Drops 31 Percent
The Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas) stated that the fatality rate from accidents during the 2026 Eid period fell by up to 31.19% compared to 2025. Korlantas Chief Irjen Agus Suryonugroho attributed the reduction in accident rates to a comprehensive evaluation of the 2025 implementation, refined with more precise, data-based strategies. “This significant decline in traffic accident fatalities is proof that security and service efforts have been effective. It is the result of hard work by all stakeholders and increased public awareness in traffic compliance,” he told reporters on Thursday (2/4). He noted that during Operation Ketupat 2026, the number of fatalities from accidents decreased by 136 compared to the previous year’s Eid period. Overall, the number of traffic accident cases also dropped 6.31%, from 3,754 to 3,517 cases. The decline was also recorded in serious injuries by 13.8%. “This shows that preventive measures and the readiness of officers in the field have successfully reduced the severity of accidents on mudik routes,” he said. On the other hand, he assessed that increased discipline and public awareness in traffic also contributed significantly to curbing accident and fatality numbers. According to him, compliance with officer instructions and prioritising safety have become key factors in the success of this year’s mudik. Agus added that during the period from 13 to 29 March 2026, the number of vehicles leaving Jakarta reached 3.2 million, an 18.43% increase from normal conditions. Meanwhile, inbound traffic to Jakarta reached 2.9 million vehicles, a 10.79% rise from normal. On the other hand, he noted that compliance among mudik travellers returning to Jakarta was quite high, at around 88.1% of the total projected vehicles that had re-entered the capital by the end of the operation period. From the public transport sector, Agus said there was a significant increase in passengers across all modes. The highest increase was in the port sector by 15.51%, or 5.52 million passengers, followed by terminals at 11.41%, stations at 8.06%, and airports at 6.99%. Finally, Agus said the success of the 2026 Eid Mudik was inseparable from the role of Police Chief Jenderal Listyo Sigit Prabowo, who directly went to the field to monitor and provide directions to all ranks during Operation Ketupat 2026. “The leadership and full attention of the Police Chief have been a key factor in ensuring that mudik security and services run optimally,” he stated.
