JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Traffic around the Hotel Indonesia (HI) roundabout in Central Jakarta was congested during the ‘Illumination of Jakarta: Glow of Peace’ Waisak Day commemoration event on Friday, 29 May 2026. KOMPAS.com’s observations at the HI roundabout at 7:25 PM WIB showed traffic flowing from Jalan Jenderal Sudirman to Jalan MH Thamrin was crawling. Dozens of Transport Department (Dishub) officers were on standby around the roundabout fountain to manage two- and four-wheeled traffic heading north. Meanwhile, traffic from Jalan MH Thamrin to Jalan Jenderal Sudirman was busy but flowing smoothly. Despite the congestion, no traffic diversions or road closures were observed around the event site. The HI roundabout area served as the main stage for the ‘Illumination of Jakarta: Glow of Peace’ event. The stage was set up on the northern side of the roundabout fountain. Directly in front of the stage was a two-metre-tall Buddha statue installation seated on a lotus flower. The statue was illuminated with bright yellow lights, making it prominent beneath the Bundaran HI Transjakarta bus stop. The ‘Illumination of Jakarta: Glow of Peace’ event was held to commemorate the 2570 BE Waisak Day in 2026. The event featured cultural performances, communal prayers, light installations, and public cultural attractions. Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno attended the event at the HI roundabout to observe proceedings.
