Traffic Authority Reveals Why Many Motorists Drive Against Traffic on Bekasi Road
JAKARTA - Prisno Jogiara, head of the traffic section at the East Jakarta Transport Sub-department, has revealed the reasons behind the frequent incidents of motorists driving against traffic on Bekasi Road in Cakung, East Jakarta.
According to Jogiara, this typically occurs during heavy congestion periods when traffic backs up towards Kolong Cakung junction. As a result, many riders risk driving against the flow of traffic to avoid the congestion.
However, the prevalence of motorists driving against traffic actually hampers traffic flow on Bekasi Road. Despite this, Jogiara claimed that his department, along with the East Jakarta traffic police, regularly intercepts motorists driving against traffic on the road.
He also stated that traffic management authorities have anticipated congestion on Bekasi Road, particularly during peak hours.
“The presence of traffic police and transport authority officers who intercept drivers forces them to seek alternative routes or turn back to the correct lanes, keeping traffic flowing toward Bekasi,” he explained.
Jogiara added that congestion on Bekasi Road is driven by the high volume of vehicles, particularly at Kolong Cakung junction.
“The traffic congestion at Kolong Cakung junction is caused by many vehicles cutting through, and there is no clear traffic light system,” Jogiara said.
Based on observations around 10:40 WIB, several riders continued to drive against traffic despite the presence of large trucks on the route. This practice is considered dangerous to safety for both the offenders and other road users.
Meanwhile, traffic flowing from Pulogadung towards Bekasi was reported as clear. Conditions were notably different in the opposite direction, which was quite congested.
