Traffic accidents
From Bisnis Indonesia
The absence of pedestrian bridges is one of the major causes of traffic accidents. A pedestrian risks their life when crossing the road. For example, road accidents often take place near the exit gate of the toll road in Kebon Nanas, Tangerang. Every day the traffic on that particular road is busy. Trucks, buses and a considerable number of motorcycles carrying passengers use the road. A great number of pedestrians cross the road, particularly in peak hours.
The absence of bus stops in that area worsens the situation. Groups of pedestrians and passengers are found at many locations covering several hundred meters. People board buses at any convenient place, obstructing the traffic flow.
Traffic accidents occur almost every day in that area where a vehicle, usually at high speed, hits a pedestrian. Crossing the road can be a dangerous exercise because trucks or buses coming from Jakarta like to overtake other vehicles unnoticed by the pedestrians.
Unfortunately the Tangerang administration has paid little attention to the present situation. Although they have taken measures to prevent accidents, development of the area should be matched by efforts to increase public safety.
