Traditional Japanese Mochi Snack Gets a Modern Twist
PT DSI Persero will fully assume export functions from January 2027.
There is a demand for traditional snacks that remain practical for a modern lifestyle. One traditional snack consumers are seeking is mochi.
‘We see the main issue with traditional mochi is that it is not very practical to carry on the go, and fresh mochi products have a short shelf life and require refrigeration. Mochi that stays chewy even at room temperature for several hours represents a gap that underpins our innovation. Therefore, we are providing a snack solution that carries Japanese cultural value but is flexible for today’s lifestyle,’ said Jessica Sihombing, Head Project of Mooochii Indonesia, in a written statement on Friday (22/5).
Through this innovation, Mooochii also differentiates itself from similar products on the market. Jessica said that a more flexible product format is one of the main value propositions.
‘Our main innovation is the format of the Japanese mochi that still retains a soft and chewy texture but is more practical. The product is available in a variety of flavours such as red bean, chocolate, sesame, and mango, well packaged in single units as well as gift boxes. Mooochii presents a solution for people who want to give premium gifts but still practical to carry,’ she explained.
Consequently, Infobrand.id CEO, Susilowati Ningsih, said they awarded Mooochii the Top Innovation Choice Award 2026 for an innovation deemed to have added value relevant to current consumer needs. This is an award organised by Infobrand.id together with Tras N Co Indonesia. (I-2)
