Traders Express Hope for Redevelopment of Taman Puring Market: A Jakarta Icon

Taman Puring Market in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, remains levelled to the ground one year after a devastating fire. Traders are now hoping that the Jakarta Provincial Government will move swiftly to redevelop the market.

“I am confident, and my colleagues are also confident in the Governor, because the Governor is pro-people. The Governor always manages the needs of the people and has renovated several markets, so I am certain that Taman Puring will also be neatly redeveloped,” said Asmuni, the Coordinator of Taman Puring Stalls, when met at the location on Thursday (10/09/2026).

Asmuni expressed his trust that the policies issued by Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung will be fair. He noted that the Governor has successfully managed other markets in Jakarta, such as the Kramat Jati Market in East Jakarta.

“Several markets have been renovated by the Governor, and I am very confident in his policies and trust in what he will do for us. Our hope is that, despite the current issues, Taman Puring will be established more permanently rather than being subject to new, uncertain policies,” he stated.

Asmuni explained that traders hope the Taman Puring Market will not disappear, as they consider the market to be one of Jakarta’s icons.

“Regarding policy, we sincerely hope to those in power that Taman Puring remains. Please do not allow a part of Jakarta’s icon to be lost,” he said.

Asmuni added that Taman Puring still attracts many customers despite the current situation where stalls are only set up under temporary tents. He noted that the market is well-known among the public.

“Customers are still coming. Because the name Taman Puring Market is a Jakarta icon; it is a legendary market,” he explained.

Asmuni did not deny hearing rumours that Taman Puring Market might be converted into Jakarta’s first Disability Park. Nevertheless, he hopes for the best solution for the traders, whether they are relocated to the same site or elsewhere.

“As traders, we at least need clarity. If the policymakers want to change its purpose, there should at least be space for MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) and a designated percentage for the market; there must be a win-win solution,” he said.

Asmuni feels that if Taman Puring disappears entirely, traders will struggle to find new locations to set up their stalls, prompting their plea for a fair resolution.

“If it suddenly disappears, we are the victims of the fire. Before the fire, there was no information, and only after the fire did news emerge about it becoming a park. Therefore, we hope for a win-win solution. Whatever the policymakers decide, at least the name ‘Taman Puring Market’ should remain,” he added.

Furthermore, Asmuni intends to hold an audience with Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung to directly convey the traders’ grievances and aspirations regarding Taman Puring.

“We have already sent a letter to the Governor. We wish to hold an audience with the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) and the Mayor. We sincerely hope to be summoned so that we can clearly express our concerns and ensure our aspirations are heard directly,” he concluded.
