Trademark Services in Indonesia Become Shorter and More Affordable

The Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) of the Ministry of Law has reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating trademark registration services to support national business actors.

Through the optimisation of the examination system, the trademark registration process in Indonesia can now be completed on average within six months.

Director General of Intellectual Property, Hermansyah Siregar, stated that this acceleration is part of the government’s efforts to provide a more inclusive and accessible intellectual property protection system for the public.

“With more streamlined procedures, we want to ensure that the public, especially trademark applicants, obtain legal certainty in the most efficient manner,” said Hermansyah in his statement quoted on Wednesday (13/5).

He emphasised that transparent and affordable services will encourage public awareness to promptly legalise their valuable assets through an increasingly integrated system.

He explained that transparent and affordable services will increase business actors’ awareness to legally register their trademarks promptly.

In terms of costs and duration, Indonesia is considered quite competitive compared to several other countries in the region and advanced nations.

For example, in Malaysia, the trademark registration process through MyIPO generally takes longer with costs around Rp3.3 million per class.

Meanwhile, in Japan, trademark registration costs through JPO reach about Rp4.8 million with a processing duration of between seven and 12 months.

In the United States, applicants need to prepare costs of around Rp5.5 million with a waiting time of up to 18 months, while in the European region, registration costs can reach tens of millions of rupiah.

This more efficient standard of time and cost in Indonesia certainly provides moral and financial support for local entrepreneurs to quickly focus on product development and promotion.

It does not stop there; the state’s favouritism is also evident through special rates for micro, small, and medium enterprises, which are charged only Rp500,000.

This scheme makes access to intellectual property protection in the country feel more inclusive for all segments of society. Although offering conveniences in terms of duration and tariffs, DJKI ensures that the quality of protection remains the main focus.

Director of Trademarks and Geographical Indications, Fajar Sulaeman Taman, said that although the process is now much faster and more affordable, the thoroughness aspect in examination remains the top priority.

This is done to ensure that every registered trademark has strong distinctiveness and does not infringe on others’ rights, thereby minimising the risk of future legal disputes.

“The speed of the six-month duration does not reduce our thoroughness standards. Examinations are conducted deeply and comprehensively to guarantee the quality of registered trademarks. We want the public to feel secure because their trademarks have gone through an accurate validation process, so the legal foundation for authentic Indonesian products remains solid in the global market,” stated Fajar.

Access to legal protection is no longer a complicated or expensive challenge. With short examination durations and highly competitive costs, this is the best momentum for business owners to provide security guarantees for their business identities.

Therefore, do not let your hard work go without legal protection just because of delaying a registration step that has actually been greatly facilitated by the state.

Let us make your trademark a legally recognised valuable asset. All self-registration procedures can be carried out practically through the official website merek.dgip.go.id. With increasingly efficient procedures, let us realise economic independence through early intellectual property protection.
