Trademark Dispute Continues as BYD Considers Danza as Alternative Name
Trademark dispute over Denza in Indonesia remains unresolved despite the Supreme Court rejecting BYD’s cassation appeal. Luther Panjaitan, Head of Public & Government Relations at PT BYD Motor Indonesia, stated the company is still monitoring the case through legal channels. ‘This isn’t about winning or losing; it’s about who has the right, and we are still processing it,’ he said in Jakarta on May 25, 2026. The registration covers Class 12 for vehicles and components, and Class 37 for maintenance, repair, and electric vehicle charging services. However, Luther did not confirm whether the name ‘Danza’ would be used as a new brand identity in Indonesia. ‘Our legal team has a better understanding of the details, and this is ongoing. We are confident we will secure it,’ he added. The court ruled BYD’s lawsuit inadmissible due to issues with legal subject matter or error in persona. The case is significant as Denza is BYD’s premium vehicle brand now being marketed in Indonesia, part of its strategy to expand its premium electric vehicle market in the country. With legal proceedings ongoing and ‘Danza’ as a backup option, it remains to be seen how BYD will proceed to maintain its premium brand identity in Indonesia.
