Jakarta has a new virus fully supported by the government.

“We call it virus K or the creative virus. We hope this virus will infect people in Indonesia to be more creative in order to develop creative industry in the country,” Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu told journalists during a press conference of the Creative Economic Exhibition at Jakarta Convention Centre (JCC) on Friday.

The exhibition, which uses Virus K as its theme, presents 14 sub-sectors of local creative industries such as print, film, design, architecture, handcraft, music and games.

“Virus K will help the Indonesian creative industry compete with other nations.”

According to Mari, between 2002 and 2006, the creative industry has gained Rp 104 trillion (US$10,5 billion) or 6.3 percent of national income.

“We expect creative industry will contribute 7 percent to the national income next year.”
