Trade Minister Urges MSMEs to Obtain NIB for Financing Access and Digital Market Expansion

Minister of Trade Budi Santoso is encouraging all business actors, from micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to large corporations, to immediately obtain a Business Identification Number (NIB) to reap various benefits for business development. He confirmed that the NIB application process is free of charge and can be completed online through the Online Single Submission (OSS) system, requiring only identity data and business information.

“By possessing an NIB, business actors contribute to upholding regulations while simultaneously opening up wider opportunities for access to financing, as well as coaching and partnership programmes in an increasingly competitive digital market,” Budi said in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to Budi, this policy aims to encourage business actors trading on electronic commerce platforms to secure business legality, while also unlocking opportunities to enhance the competitiveness of products traded digitally. With the enactment of Trade Minister Regulation Number 19 of 2026, every business actor conducting trade through e-commerce platforms is required to hold a business licence, at minimum an NIB.

Furthermore, e-commerce platform operators are obliged to reject the registration of traders who do not possess the required business licences in accordance with statutory provisions. To provide sufficient room for adaptation, the government has set a grace period of 18 months for existing traders on digital platforms and six months for new traders to fulfil the licensing obligation.
