Trade Minister Tightens Oversight of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations, Launches First National Measuring Device
JAKARTA — The government has begun tightening oversight of measuring instruments at Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) as usage grows in Indonesia. This move aims to ensure consumers receive the correct amount of electricity paid for when charging their vehicles.
Trade Minister Budi Santoso said the launch of the Type Approval and Verification Service for Electric Vehicle Charging Measuring Instruments is part of the government’s effort to strengthen consumer protection amid the growing national electric vehicle ecosystem.
He noted that accurate measuring instruments are crucial as EV charging technology is still relatively new to many Indonesians.
‘We must ensure that when SPKLU is used to charge vehicles, what consumers receive matches what they pay for. Especially since this is new technology, the public may not be aware of it,’ Budi said at the launch event at the Ministry of Trade’s parking lot in Jakarta on Monday, 25 May 2026.
Budi stressed that the government continues to push for clean energy transition as part of greenhouse gas emission reduction targets in the energy sector. During this transition, electric vehicles are seen as a key solution to reduce pollution and improve air quality.
He also praised the Directorate General of Consumer Protection and Trade Order (PKTN) for swiftly introducing SPKLU measurement monitoring services before public complaints arose.
‘Do not wait for complaints before providing SPKLU measuring instruments,’ he said.
This is the first such device in Indonesia. The government hopes to expand implementation nationwide next year.
At the same event, PKTN Director General Moga Simatupang explained that the type approval service for SPKLU measuring instruments is part of implementing Trade Ministerial Regulation No. 33 of 2025, which governs business activities and product/service standards under risk-based licensing in trade and legal metrology.
Moga said type approval serves as a control instrument in the legal metrology system to protect consumers from potential losses in measurement-related transactions.
‘Type approval is a business permit confirming that measuring instruments, weighing devices, and other equipment, whether domestically produced or imported, have met technical requirements through assessment and conformity testing,’ he explained.
He added that each measuring instrument will undergo inspection and testing by legal metrology officers to ensure compliance with technical standards, including verifying performance against manufacturer claims.
