Trade Minister: Garlic Prices Stable, Imports from China Key

JAKARTA - Trade Minister Budi Santoso, known as Busan, stated that garlic prices remain secure even as the world faces turmoil from the war in West Asia. Busan explained that the conflict involving Israel and the United States against Iran does not significantly disrupt garlic supplies, as they are imported from China. According to him, garlic prices have not risen due to geopolitical volatility. Busan noted that as long as logistics conditions are safe, there are no issues with garlic supplies. This is because imported garlic relies on a single supplier. Imports are conducted gradually to prevent the supplier from raising prices. “If we suddenly take a large amount, prices rise because demand surges, right? The Chinese supplier will definitely increase prices,” Busan said. This policy is understood by garlic importers to keep the price of this kitchen staple stable. “We are working together to stabilise prices, one way being regulations on imports,” Busan added. Based on data from the Market and Essential Needs Monitoring System (SP2KP) of the Ministry of Trade, the national average price of Honan garlic on 27 March was Rp 36,543 per kilogram. Among strategic food commodities, garlic is one that still depends on other countries. Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman stated that he received instructions from President Prabowo Subianto to accelerate garlic self-sufficiency. Shortly after being called by Prabowo, he headed to Sembalun, East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), on Monday (9/2/2026).
