Trade meet to hear globalization fears
KUALA LUMPUR (DPA): Malaysia will raise the developing world's
fears of the detrimental effects of globalization at a United
Nations trade conference in Bangkok beginning next week, Prime
Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on Saturday.
Mahathir will be attending the 10th UN Conference on Trade and
Development (UNCTAD) in the Thai capital which will be held from
Feb. 12 to 19.
"Trade and development appear to be affected among developing
countries because they can't adapt themselves to globalization
and free trade," he told reporters.
Developing countries, he added, were also concerned about the
effects of too many giant mergers between huge multinationals in
industrialized nations.
Mahathir said he hoped the Bangkok conference could come up
with ideas on how developing countries could cope with and
address the problems of increasing globalization.
