Track Record

Track Record is the record of the life journey of a person, an organisation, a company, a state institution, and so on. From such a track record one learns the milestones in life, success, failure, shortcomings, and strengths.

A track record may be written in memoirs, biographies, and other documents. It can take the form of buildings, objects, photographs, and cultural artefacts. Many track records are not written, but become oral stories told in speech.

In the digital era, there are traces containing conversations recorded on diverse digital platforms such as Whatsapp, Instagram, YouTube, e-mail, and others.

A track record also means legacy, meaningful and beneficial deeds across generations, through time. The Prophet Ibrahim alaihi al-salam prayed: “O Allah, grant me knowledge, admit me into the company of the righteous, make me a good word for future generations, and admit me to the surga an-naim,” (QS Asy-Syuara [26]: 83-85).

Allah answered the prayers of Prophet Ibrahim. Allah bestowed upon Prophet Ibrahim righteous offspring, Prophet Ismail and Prophet Ishak. The city of Mecca, the Hajj pilgrimage, and all of Prophet Ibrahim’s relics around the Ka’bah are traces of history left by Prophet Ibrahim. His name is mentioned by billions of Muslims in salutations in all prayers.

The Malay proverb: “Harimau mati meninggalkan belang.” “Gajah mati meninggalkan gading.” The message is that human life is not merely a record of time. Life in the world is very brief, like a traveller passing through. Yet, that brief life must be meaningful for the greatest possible benefit of humanity and the universe.

One day, a companion proudly showed with pride his name written as one of those who validates and verifies (tashih) the Qur’an. While pointing at his name, he told the author, “I do not bequeath wealth to my children. To them, I bequeath the name as a tashih Al-Qur’an verifier.” Truly noble.

Humans will be remembered, will have a legacy, if during life they continually do good, give the best, plant virtue. Those good deeds are recorded in the life history of family, nation, and humanity.

What is mainly recorded by the two angels Rakib and Atid: “No word is spoken, but beside it there is a watching angel who is always ready to record,” (QS Qaf [50]: 18). That is the record that will lead a person to heaven or hell.

The verses about fasting (QS Al-Baqarah [2]: 183-189) end with the phrase la ‘alla’ which in Arabic means a realistic hope, a request that is (very) likely to be granted. May we become people of taqwa (183), may we become grateful (185), may we gain the truth (186), and may we be fortunate, succeed (189).

Ramadan is the month of goodness. A month in which we plant virtue, do the best. “Whoever with a sincere heart does good, that is better for him,” (QS Al-Baqarah [2]:184).

May all acts of worship and good deeds throughout life, especially in the month of Ramadan, become a good track record in this world and in the hereafter.

In worldly life, there are people whose life is always difficult. They are beset by misfortune. One problem has not ended before the next one arrives. Why? Who are they?

In worldly life, there are people whose life is always easy. Their careers are brilliant. Sustenance flows. Children and grandchildren are pious and virtuous.

RAMADAN is the month identified with kultum (seven-minute lectures). Generally, kultum contains religious sermons.

ROJALI-ROHANA in this article is not the name of a person. It is not a married couple either. Rojali-Rohana is merely an acronym. Rojali: a seldom-purchased group.

In his book Tarbiyyah al-Ruhiyyah, Dr Said Hawwa reminds us that there are four steps toward God.

Atalia Praratya, a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives for the 2024-2029 period from the Golkar Party, is currently the focus of public scrutiny after news of her divorce suit against Ridwan Kamil, the former Governor of West Java.

The 2024 General Election organisation has drawn attention, this time not only for the technical aspects of electoral governance, but also issues of ethics and the lifestyle of KPU commissioners.

Researcher from Unmul, Herdiansyah Hamzah alias Castro, assesses that the Chair of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for 2024-2029 Setyo Budiyanto has a problematic track record.
