Tracing the Serayu Riverbank: The Serayu Train Remains a Favourite for Mobility and Southern Cross-Corridor Tourism

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Amid high mobility of people across the southern corridor of Java, the Serayu railway service remains one of the economy train options favoured by the public. The Purwokerto–Pasarsenen line via Bandung continues to be a popular choice as it links residential areas, educational hubs, tourist towns, and local economic centres in one long, connected journey.
Based on KAI data, the Serayu passenger volume from January to April 2026 reached 446,704, up from 434,678 in the same period of 2025. The growth is supported by high mobility along the Jakarta, Bandung, Tasikmalaya, Kroya, and Purwokerto corridor, which has long been one of the most active travel routes on the southern cross.
Vice President Corporate Communication KAI Anne Purba said the Serayu train has a strong and consistent passenger character because it serves a very diverse travel need.
“Serayu serves the corridor with mobility alive year-round. There are passengers travelling for work, study, economic activity, and family and leisure travel. The line also connects cities with growing regional activity,” Anne said.
Monthly, the Serayu passenger pattern shows a stable trend. In January 2026, Serayu served 115,585 passengers, February 99,291 passengers, March rose to 118,386 passengers, and April again grew to 113,442 passengers. The figures are above those achieved in the same period last year, namely January 2025 with 110,995 passengers, February 103,696 passengers, March 100,530 passengers, and April 119,457 passengers.
This consistency shows that Serayu remains the primary choice for people travelling medium- and long-distance with affordable fares. In addition to connecting Jakarta with the Banyumas Raya region, Serayu travel also strengthens intercity connectivity in Priangan Timur and southern Central Java which have growing educational, trade, and tourism activities.
In terms of travel experience, Serayu has a distinctive appeal compared to other services on the island of Java. The train traverses Jabodetabek industrial areas, the Priangan Timur mountain range, and the Serayu River landscape which is an identity of Purwokerto and its surroundings. This landscape presents dynamic panorama changes along the journey.
As it passes through Nagreg, Cicalengka, and Cibatu, passengers can enjoy views of green hills, valleys, and the twisty railway line characteristic of the southern cross. Entering Kroya and Purwokerto, the journey atmosphere changes to vast rice fields and the Serayu River, one of Banyumas’s geographical icons.
The Serayu train is also connected to various top tourist destinations along its route. From Purwokerto, passengers can continue to Baturraden at the foot of Mount Slamet, Cipendok Waterfall, and Banyumas culinary and Sokaraja tourism areas. Meanwhile in Priangan Timur, passengers can enjoy Gunung Galunggung natural scenery, the atmosphere of Tasikmalaya city, and the centre of embroidered lace and geulis umbrellas which are part of the region’s cultural identity.
