Tracing the Historic Coffee Roots Regrowing on Mount Gambar

On the slopes of Mount Gambar, the aroma of coffee once again fills the air after decades during which the traces of coffee plantations were nearly forgotten. Since 2021, the local community has begun reviving robusta coffee cultivation on two hectares of land. This coffee plantation not only yields a harvest but also resurrects a history stretching back to the VOC era, strengthens tourism potential, and opens new sources of livelihood for residents. Historical records note that the Mount Gambar area was once a coffee cultivation region during the colonial period. Now, those traces are being tended once more by the hands of farmers who hope the local coffee can become widely recognised again. Behind every harvest lies the hope that Mount Gambar coffee will continue to develop as a regional flagship product. The combination of history, agriculture, and tourism serves as capital for the community to build a sustainable future.
