TPS3R Sadu Kencana in Tabanan Focuses on Waste Sorting Education
The TPS3R Sadu Kencana in Dauh Peken Village, Tabanan District, Bali, chooses to focus on educating about waste sorting at the source rather than pursuing profits. The facility’s coordinator and public relations officer, Gracia Andriana, stated that this concept has been implemented since the TPS3R was built in 2023. “We are a quasi-public service. Our focus is on educating the community to sort waste at the source, not chasing profit margins,” said Gracia Andriana when met at the site on Monday (13/4/2026). This TPS3R serves around 530 customers, equivalent to 600 households (KK). However, this number does not yet cover all households in Dauh Peken Village, which totals around 4,000 KK. In its operations, TPS3R Sadu Kencana collects three types of waste that have already been sorted by customers: organic, inorganic, and residue. Each day, an average of two pickup truck loads of waste arrive at the site to be sorted more meticulously before being channelled to third parties to avoid accumulation. “Upon arrival at the TPS, the waste is sorted again, washed, and cleaned to prevent odours. We accept 24 types of waste here,” she explained. The education-focused concept has attracted volunteers from various countries such as the UK, Spain, Germany, and Canada. Andriana mentioned that these mostly young foreign volunteers are directly involved in the waste sorting process. Their presence is seen as providing positive energy while strengthening the education movement. “They come, learn, exchange experiences, and even bring waste to sort. This greatly helps our campaign,” added the woman from Yogyakarta. With six operational staff and volunteer support, TPS3R Sadu Kencana continues to strengthen its role as a community-based waste management education centre. “We are glad not to be running alone now. This education will be effective if done together,” she concluded.
