Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) – PT Terminal Petikemas Surabaya (TPS) has strengthened workers’ preparedness for extreme weather through an emergency-response simulation focused on strong winds, aiming to protect employees and ensure the smooth flow of logistics at the port.

TPS Senior Operations Management Manager Didik Kurniawan said greater vigilance was essential as the rainy season began, because strong winds could disrupt loading and unloading activities and endanger workers in the dock area.

“As the rainy season begins, all workers must remain focused and increase their vigilance against the possibility of strong winds in the operational area,” he said in Surabaya on Friday.

Through the drill, TPS sought to ensure that every worker understood the risks that might arise, knew what steps to take and could respond quickly and appropriately in line with established procedures.

The effort took the form of a Strong Wind Safety Drill held at TPS’s International Wharf, involving equipment operators, dock service staff, stevedores (TKBM), and operational management and Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) teams.

The simulation tested several emergency scenarios, including suspending cargo-handling operations when wind speeds exceeded the safe operating limit for cranes, containers swaying in strong gusts, and workers being exposed to powerful winds on the dock.

The exercise also covered how to handle materials or equipment blown by the wind, heavy rain that reduced visibility, and emergency communication routes in case the main communications facilities failed.

Didik said the drill tested not only individuals’ ability to deal with emergencies, but also whether coordination and communication between functions would work effectively during operational disruption.

He said regular exercises were part of building a company-wide safety culture, ensuring that workers understood their responsibilities and the procedures they must follow to minimise the risk of workplace accidents.

Preparedness is also essential to maintaining reliable port services, as weather-related operational disruptions can affect cargo handling and the distribution of goods.

By strengthening skills and compliance with safety procedures, TPS is seeking to ensure terminal operations remain safe and sustainable while maintaining service quality for customers.

“Safety remains the top priority in every TPS operational activity,” he said.
