Dozens of elderly residents began the activity with a morning exercise session and health checks at Balai Banjar Bonjaka Tegallalang on Tuesday, 19 May 2026. The event is part of empowerment and socialisation to improve the quality of life for an ageing population in Gianyar, organised by the team for the empowerment and welfare of families (TP PKK).

‘This activity forms part of the Gianyar Regency TP PKK Family Health Effort programme to realise healthy, strong, resilient and empowered elderly people within the community,’ said Ida Ayu Surya Adnyani Mahayastra, Chairperson of TP PKK Gianyar, in a statement on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.

Adnyani said the activities included elderly exercise sessions, free health checks, health consultations, and free spectacles for the elderly present, as well as dissemination and education on healthy foods that are not hard, not salty and not fatty.

Comfortable clothing, safe housing and access to regular health services that are affordable, easy and accessible were also topics of the socialisation. Most importantly, there are spiritual and psychological aspects.

‘Older people need space to interact, to chat, to engage in activities, and to have companionship during medical treatment,’ Adnyani said.

Adnyani noted that the annual number of elderly residents in Gianyar is an indicator of the success of social development and public health. The healthcare services provided by the government are accessible to the community, contributing to a rising life expectancy.

With all these activities, it is hoped to keep elderly people healthy, active, independent and able to lead a happy and productive old age within their families and communities. In addition, basic needs such as clothing, food, decent housing, healthcare services, spiritual and social support can be reached for the elderly.

‘Government concern and the care of the community, especially families with elderly members, is a shared responsibility to improve social welfare. The elderly must continue to fulfil their social functions and play an active role in community life,’ she said.
