JAKARTA — The compact sedan segment in Indonesia has regained attention following Toyota Astra Motor’s official launch of the Toyota Vios Hybrid. The introduction of the hybrid model has intensified competition in the urban sedan market, particularly when compared to the Mazda 2 Sedan, which has long been recognised for its premium character. Despite operating in a similar segment, the two models differ significantly. The Vios Hybrid emphasises efficiency and electrification technology, while the Mazda 2 Sedan prioritises premium design and driving experience. In terms of design, the two cars have distinct characters. The Toyota Vios Hybrid presents an aggressive, sporty look with sharp body lines. Its electrification identity is evident through the HEV emblem and futuristic exterior details. Conversely, the Mazda 2 Sedan adopts Kodo design philosophy, a hallmark of Mazda. Its appearance leans towards elegance, featuring a large chrome-accented grille and slim LED headlights that convey a premium feel. The hybrid character makes the Vios Hybrid smooth, particularly in urban traffic conditions. The electric motor provides instant response, enhancing driving comfort during stop-and-go scenarios. Meanwhile, the Mazda 2 Sedan relies on a 1.5-litre SKYACTIV-G engine with a displacement of 1,496cc, producing 109 horsepower and 144 Newton-metres of torque. Power is delivered via a six-speed automatic transmission to the front wheels. Handling is another strength thanks to G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus) technology, which aids stability during manoeuvres. In terms of efficiency, the Toyota Vios Hybrid clearly offers an advantage through its electrification system. The car can operate on electric power at low speeds, resulting in better fuel economy and a quieter cabin.
