JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The weakening of the Rupiah against the US dollar is starting to become a concern for the national automotive industry. This condition is considered to have an impact on vehicle production costs and potential increases in credit interest rates.

Based on trading data on Tuesday (12/5/2026), the Rupiah exchange rate closed at IDR 17,529 per US dollar. This figure is one of the weakest positions for the Rupiah in recent times.

In response to this condition, Marketing Director of PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM), Bansar Maduma, said that his company is continuing to monitor the development of the exchange rate before making decisions regarding vehicle prices.

According to him, Toyota hopes that the dollar exchange rate will return to stability so that the impact on the automotive industry is not too large.

“So we will continue to monitor it. Hopefully, in the future, the dollar will decrease, so that we can minimise the impact. Hopefully, if it continues to fall in the future, there will be no need for a price increase,” said Bansar.

However, Toyota has not yet been able to confirm whether the weakening of the Rupiah will lead to adjustments in vehicle selling prices in Indonesia.

Bansar explained that Toyota is currently also continuing to discuss with various parties in the industry chain to find efficiency measures so that the impact of the Rupiah’s weakening can be reduced.

“We are actually also trying to discuss with all parties, all stakeholders, on how we prepare vehicles, and we are also doing a lot of efficiency measures to address the increase,” said Bansar.

The weakening of the Rupiah has the potential to affect the automotive industry because there are still a number of vehicle components that depend on imports and transactions based on the US dollar. In addition, this condition can also have an impact on logistics costs and vehicle financing schemes.
