Toyota Promises New Hilux Will Remain a 'Rhino', Unveils BEV Version
Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM) has affirmed that the development of the ninth-generation New Hilux not only focuses on refreshing the design or improving performance, but also stems from the real needs of customers across various business sectors in Indonesia. Armed with user feedback, Toyota has refined four main aspects to ensure its flagship pickup remains relevant for both business and personal use.
Marketing Director of PT Toyota-Astra Motor, Bansar Maduma, stated that the Hilux has long served as an operational vehicle in various Indonesian regions, from mining areas in Southeast Sulawesi and East Kalimantan to the manufacturing, construction, and logistics sectors. The Hilux is also used by private customers for outdoor activities and adventures. This trust, he said, has enabled the Hilux to command approximately 70 percent of the 4x4 pickup market segment in Indonesia.
‘The evolution of the Hilux is not just about delivering better specifications. We observe how customers use the Hilux, the challenges they face, and what they truly need,’ Bansar said during a presentation at the Toyota booth at GIIAS 2026 in ICE BSD City, Tangerang.
Toyota translated this customer feedback into four main improvements: New Tough and Modern Design, New Powerful Engine Performance, New Comfort and Convenient Features, and New Reliable Safety and Peace of Mind. Bansar emphasised that these four aspects are designed to provide a better driving experience without diminishing the Hilux’s tough character, known as ‘badak’ (rhino) across all terrains.
In terms of design, the New Hilux adopts a concept inspired by ‘cyber sumo’, presenting a more robust yet agile appearance. The refresh is visible in the bolder front grille, sleeker LED headlamps, a larger Toyota emblem, and a ground clearance of up to 312 millimetres. Toyota has also fitted 18-inch alloy wheels on the V variant and 17-inch wheels on the G and A variants, while the cabin features a new, more modern and functional cockpit design.
Performance has also been enhanced with a 1GD 2,800 cc diesel engine producing up to 201 hp and 500 Nm of torque for the automatic transmission, and 430 Nm for the manual transmission. This engine is paired with a 4WD drive system and a Rear Differential Lock to improve traction when carrying loads or traversing heavy terrain. Bansar stressed that these improvements are not merely about chasing performance figures, but about giving drivers greater confidence when facing various road conditions.
