Toyota produces Asian car

TOKYO (Reuters): Toyota Motor Corp. said yesterday that it
has begun production of a multi-purpose vehicle for the Asian
market, Toyota Unser, in Malaysia.

The new vehicle will be available on July 17 with two types,
one with a 1.8 liter gasoline engine and the other with a 2.4
liter diesel engine, a Toyota spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman said that the vehicle will be assembled at UMW
Toyota Motor Sdn. Bhd.

Toyota expects to sell a little less than 1,000 units of the
vehicle before the end of this year, she said.

More than half of the auto parts for the vehicle are procured
in the member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations, she said.
