Toyota Land Cruiser Arrives with New Engine, Ready for Global Debut with Robust Performance
Toyota has unveiled the 2026 Land Cruiser FJ, a legendary SUV now equipped with a new engine and enhanced performance to meet the demands of global consumers. The vehicle retains its hallmark off-road toughness whilst sporting an iconic retro-modern design.
Reliable 2.7-Litre Petrol Engine for Daily Adventures and Off-Road Use
The initial version of the Land Cruiser FJ utilises a 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that has proven its reliability in other Toyota models such as the Hilux and Fortuner. The engine produces 161 hp and 246 Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a 4×4 drivetrain. It offers a balance of performance, fuel efficiency and durability, suitable for both off-road terrain and everyday use.
2.8-Litre Turbodiesel Option in the Future
Toyota is also considering the addition of a 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine for the next generation, potentially around 2029. This engine is capable of producing 201 hp and 500 Nm of torque, ideal for high-torque demands in challenging terrain. Some diesel variants are also likely to be supported by a 48V mild-hybrid system to improve fuel efficiency and comply with global emission standards.
Global Launch Commencing Mid-2026
Production of the 2026 Land Cruiser FJ will begin in Thailand, with a phased rollout across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Africa from mid-2026. In Japan, the official launch is scheduled for May 2026 with the VX trim offering a comprehensive set of standard features, including square LED headlamps and a comfortable cabin. However, Toyota has not yet announced an official presence in North America and Europe, likely due to stricter emission regulations.
Retro-Modern Design and Functional Cabin
The Land Cruiser FJ presents a rugged boxy design, blending classic aesthetics with modern features. Its ladder-frame IMV platform provides optimal off-road capability.
