Toyota folds Asian output

TOKYO (AFP): Toyota Motor Corp. plans to double motor vehicle
output in Asian countries outside Japan to 520,000 units a year
by 1997 in an effort to restore its competitive edge damaged by a
higher yen, an economic daily said Saturday.

The leading Japanese automaker will raise production from the
current 100,000 units to 200,000 units in Thailand, from 60,000
units to 150,000 units in Indonesia, from 25,000 to around 50,000
in the Philippines and from 60,000 to 100,000 in Taiwan, the
Nihon Keizai Shimbun said.

In addition, it will continue assembling 20,000 units in
Malaysia, it said.

Toyota is building new plants in Thailand and Taiwan and
considering construction of another plant in the Philippines, the
daily said.
