Jakarta — PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) has welcomed the government’s plan to provide higher incentives for nickel-based battery electric vehicles. The policy is seen as supporting the downstream development of the industry and strengthening Indonesia’s EV ecosystem.

Previously, the government was finalising a new incentive scheme for BEV purchases in the second half of 2026. One option under consideration is to grant larger subsidies for electric vehicles using nickel-based batteries compared with non-nickel ones.

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said the policy is intended to optimise domestic nickel utilisation.

Responding, Bansar Maduma, Marketing Director of PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM), said Toyota generally supports all government policies related to the domestic automotive industry. “Primarily, Toyota Astra Motor, Toyota Indonesia, surely support all government policies. We believe the government is also considering the automotive industry in Indonesia,” he said in central Jakarta recently.

He noted that Toyota, as a manufacturer and distributor of vehicles, welcomed policies aimed at supporting consumer needs while developing the national automotive industry.

“Furthermore, when looking at government policy, as producers and distributors, we welcome it. Moreover, if the aim is to reduce consumption, as the policy states,” Bansar added.

He added that Toyota also supports various policies that can benefit consumers of electrified vehicles in Indonesia. “Whatever policy is for customers, we support. And as Toyota Astra Motor, we also see that it is not only that policy that can meet customer needs, but there are other policies as well. And Toyota also feels this,” he said.

“So if the latest policy is to enhance downstream integration, that is very good. As Toyota Astra Motor, we will surely support all government policies,” Bansar said.

The plan for higher incentives for nickel-based electric vehicles has also received positive responses from several industry players. The policy is seen as helping maximise Indonesia’s natural resources potential while accelerating the development of the national EV industry.
