Toyota Avanza Loses 'People's Car' Crown as Kijang Innova and Commercial Vehicles Dominate Sales
The dominance of the Toyota Avanza as Indonesia’s best-selling car is fading. The ‘people’s car’ moniker, attached to the Avanza for years, no longer aligns with its position on the national sales chart.
According to wholesale data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), the Toyota Avanza only placed third in the best-selling car list for June 2026, with distribution of 3,675 units. This result saw the Avanza again lose out to its ‘older sibling’, the Toyota Kijang Innova, which remained at the top with sales of 4,967 units.
Not only was it beaten by another Toyota model, the Avanza also had to concede to the Daihatsu Gran Max Pick Up commercial vehicle. The pick-up model took second place with distribution reaching 4,782 units, just 185 units behind the Kijang Innova. Amid rising economic activity and the need for vehicles in the business sector, commercial models like the Gran Max Pick Up are able to sustain high demand.
Meanwhile, the Kijang Innova continues to show its dominance in the passenger vehicle segment. Sales of the model, which consists of the Zenix and Reborn variants, remain difficult for competitors to catch despite its price being much higher than the Avanza.
Below the Avanza, the Toyota Calya shadowed with sales of 3,578 units, followed by the Suzuki Carry Pick Up with 3,442 units. The Daihatsu Gran Max Blind Van and Minibus versions also recorded strong sales of 3,046 units.
Competition is also tightening with the arrival of new brands. The Jaecoo J5, for example, managed to break into seventh position with sales of 3,041 units. The Chinese electric SUV was the only pure electric car to enter the national top 10 best-selling cars in June 2026.
Overall, the Indonesian automotive market is showing a recovery trend. Wholesale sales in June reached 77,550 units, up 12% compared to May 2026’s figure of 69,219 units. Retail sales also increased by 3.9% to 74,507 units.
From January to June 2026, total wholesale sales reached 436,564 units, an increase of approximately 15.9% compared to the same period last year. Retail sales in the first half of this year reached 433,848 units, growing by about 10.5% year-on-year.
