Toyota Australia Recalls 1,101 bZ4X Units Over Battery Software Issue

Toyota Australia is recalling 1,101 units of its bZ4X electric SUV from the 2025 to 2026 model years due to a potential software issue with the high-voltage battery. The affected electric vehicles use a battery that supplies power to the vehicle’s drive system and is controlled by an Electronic Control Unit (ECU). According to a recall notice published on Toyota Australia’s website, a warning message reading ‘EV System Malfunction’ may appear and various malfunction indicator lights on the instrument panel could illuminate due to the software problem. When this malfunction occurs, the power steering and power-assisted braking may continue to function, but the electric drive system will stop working. This condition can cause the vehicle to lose drive power while travelling at high speed, thereby increasing the risk of an accident. Toyota Australia has published a full list of vehicle identification numbers for the 1,101 units affected by the recall due to the potential battery software issue. The company stated it will contact all affected owners to schedule a free-of-charge software update for the battery ECU.
