Towards better understanding
Towards better understanding
The Islam and the West Working Together for a Peaceful World
dialog, which was held by the central board of the Muhammadiyah
two days ago, reflected the wishes of both parties, foreign
representatives in Indonesia and Muslim figures, to better
understand each other's position.
The forum was attended by Indonesian Muslim intellectuals and
envoys from Western and Arab countries. It was not a coincidence
that some of the participating ambassadors represented
governments keen on striking against terrorism the world over.
Nevertheless, the negative image of Islam cannot be
overlooked. This unfavorable image is becoming stronger as
parties claiming to be followers of Islam act without regard to
the essentials of Islamic teachings.
The image of Islam has become increasingly unfavorable,
especially after the destruction of the World Trade Center in New
York on Sept. 11, 2001, and the activities of Muslim separatists
in a number of countries. Indonesia has also borne the brunt of
the chase for terrorists all over the world, which is sometimes
conducted under any old pretext.
Western countries have much to learn about Islam in Indonesia,
which is usually characterized by dynamism and peacefulness.
