Towards a Global City, Pramono Says Jakarta is Open to Migrants
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has reaffirmed his vision of making Jakarta an inclusive and open global city for everyone, including migrants from various regions. “The Yustisi Operation has been discontinued; one indicator of a global city is that Jakarta must be friendly to migrants, with transparent and open management. The Yustisi Operation is very much a thing of the past,” Pramono stated during the Blak-blakan detikcom programme (9/4/2026). Pramono predicts that the number of migrants entering Jakarta this year will be around 12,000 to 13,000 people. This figure is significantly lower than in previous years, which reached 16,000 people. “So why does Jakarta remain a magnet for migrants? In Jakarta, almost everything is provided with ease and for free. Almost everyone knows that education, healthcare, and training are not all regions can provide such free spaces like this,” Pramono explained. He highlighted the importance of managing urbanisation wisely, ensuring a balance between economic opportunities, job availability, and the city’s infrastructure readiness. “There are still many job opportunities available in Jakarta; last year alone, we held 22 job fairs. We advise migrants coming to Jakarta to bring provisions, not just financial but also skills to survive here,” Pramono emphasised. Pramono also stressed that Jakarta’s openness must be accompanied by clear regulations and good organisation, so that population growth does not create new social problems. With a humane and measured approach, Jakarta is expected to become a competitive city on a global scale, while remaining friendly and livable for all its residents.
