KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters): High prices mean tourists are only
stopping in Malaysia's Terengganu state long enough to use the
toilets before speeding off to a neighboring state to shop, a
state politician complained on Monday.
"Nowadays tourists are coming only to relieve themselves in
Terengganu whereas they buy things in Kelantan as they feel the
goods here are very expensive," said Terengganu's councillor for
entrepreneur development, Mohammad Abdul Wahid Endut, according
to the Bernama news service.
Northeastern Kelantan and Terengganu states are among
Malaysia's least developed areas.
Mohammad Abdul said the government received many complaints
about high prices and urged vendors to practice "responsible
business ethics".
The government says 1.4 million tourists visited the state in
2000, up from 1.1 million in 1999.
