Tourist Jeep Crash at Bromo Claims Two Lives
A hardtop jeep carrying tourists was involved in a single-vehicle accident at the Mount Bromo tourist area, specifically at an S-bend in Wonokitri Village, Tosari Subdistrict, Pasuruan Regency, East Java, at 6.30 AM WIB on Friday, 29 May.
Two people were reported dead, while three other passengers sustained injuries.
Pasuruan Regency Police Traffic Unit Chief, AKP Derie Fradesca, stated that the vehicle with registration number BG-1478-EF was carrying a total of five people, comprising one driver and four passengers.
The accident began when the jeep was travelling from Penanjakan towards Bromo Sea of Sand. While navigating a steep downhill section and an S-bend, the vehicle is suspected to have experienced brake failure, causing the driver to lose control.
The jeep veered to the right, collided forcefully with a cliff, and overturned. As a result, the front of the vehicle was severely damaged, with the right front wheel reported broken.
“The sequence of events was that the vehicle involved was travelling from Penanjakan to Bromo Sea of Sand. Upon reaching the scene, it is suspected to have experienced brake issues, causing it to swerve and hit the right cliff,” Derie said when confirmed.
The two deceased were identified as the driver, Muhammad Sonif (53), a resident of Tumpang Subdistrict, Malang Regency, and passenger Yolanda Wahyu Anggraeni (27), from Pakis Subdistrict, Malang Regency.
The other three passengers, who sustained minor injuries, are a Malang-based Air Force member and two residents from Langkat Regency, North Sumatra.
The driver died immediately at the scene due to severe head injuries, while the tourist victim was evacuated to the nearest health facility before being pronounced dead.
“Total occupants were five: four passengers and one driver. One driver and one tourist died,” Derie said.
“The tourist victim was transported to the nearest healthcare facility in Sukapura, Probolinggo, where they were later declared dead,” he added.
Currently, the three injured passengers—Fardan Rasid (24), Zaimah Hani (56), and Futri Nadira Nofasari (25)—are receiving medical treatment. The material damage to the tourist jeep is estimated at Rp10 million.
