Tourist arrivals rise 10.9%

HONG KONG (DPA): Tourists arrivals to Hong Kong rose by 10.9 percent in January over the same month last year, with the total reaching 826,770, the Hong Kong Tourist Association (HKTA) announced on Wednesday.

Arrivals from Indonesia recorded the highest growth of 115.9 per cent. The HKTA said it was due mainly to a two-week holiday in Indonesia that stimulated outbound travel.

Arrivals from other Asian countries also rose sharply, with those from South Korea up by 65.3 per cent, from India up 31.1 per cent, from mainland China up 22.1 per cent, from Philippines up 20.6 per cent, and from Malaysia up 10.4 per cent.

The HKTA said the most encouraging increase was the 11.2 per cent jump in arrivals from Japan. Arrivals from Japan had dropped sharply last year.
